Earned Value Management connects planned work, the value of completed work and incurred costs. Schedule-related metrics are often expressed in monetary units as well. This can easily lead to misinterpretation.
Distinguish three measures clearly
Planned Value describes the budgeted value of work scheduled by the reporting date. Earned Value is the budgeted value of work actually completed. Actual Cost refers to the costs actually incurred for that work. A consistent scope and a traceable assessment of completion are prerequisites.
Schedule Variance is calculated as Earned Value minus Planned Value. If both measures are recorded in euros, their difference is also a euro amount. It does not represent a calendar interval in days.
A fictional numerical example
By the reporting date, work with a planned value of EUR 100,000 is scheduled. Work with a budgeted value of EUR 80,000 has actually been completed. Schedule Variance is minus EUR 20,000. The Schedule Performance Index, Earned Value divided by Planned Value, is 0.8.
This does not directly imply a delay of 20 percent or a specific number of days. Work packages have different cost and time structures. In addition, a high value of completed non-critical tasks can conceal a bottleneck on the critical path.
Read metrics together with the schedule
Performance metrics provide a reason for deeper review. A completion forecast still requires dependencies, remaining durations and available resources. A precise metric based on an unchecked progress estimate merely creates an impression of additional accuracy.
Distinguere chiaramente tre grandezze
Distinguir claramente tres magnitudes
