Altsysteme anbinden: Warum dieselben Bytes unterschiedliche Zahlen ergeben könnenConnecting legacy systems: Why identical bytes can represent different numbersCollegare sistemi legacy: perché gli stessi byte possono rappresentare numeri diversiConectar sistemas heredados: por qué los mismos bytes pueden representar números diferentes

Zwei Bytes, zwei Ergebnisse
Two systems exchange data reliably and the number of transferred bytes is correct. The new analysis still displays wrong values. When connecting legacy equipment, successful transport is only part of the task: both sides must agree on how the data is interpreted.
Byte order is part of the number format
A multi-byte integer can be represented in different byte orders. Big endian places the most significant byte first; little endian places the least significant byte first. An interface must specify which representation applies.
A computer’s internal memory layout should not be assumed to define the transmission format. A protocol can deliberately require a different order. The documented representation at the interface is what matters.
Two bytes, two results
The byte sequence 01 02 represents decimal 258 when interpreted as an unsigned 16-bit big-endian integer. Interpreting it in the opposite order gives 513. Both results may look plausible, so a simple range check might not detect the error.
Signedness, field length and scaling also need explicit definitions. A transmitted integer of 123 might represent 12.3 units when an agreed scale factor of 0.1 applies. Without that agreement, the engineering quantity remains unclear.
Use known patterns as well as real measurements
Controlled test values with predetermined representations are useful during commissioning. Different bytes make swapped order easier to recognise than values containing identical bytes. Appropriate boundary values and the handling of invalid data are tested as well.
These checks belong in a suitable test environment. Fictional payloads avoid distributing unnecessary operational or personal data for a format comparison.
Verify the contract at the boundary
Acceptance connects raw data, decoding and the engineering unit. It records which data version was checked against which expected result. This also supports later gateway or analysis changes.
A working connection demonstrates transport. Verified interpretation establishes whether both systems are communicating the same engineering information.
