Energieintensität richtig lesen: Warum weniger je Stück mehr Gesamtverbrauch bedeuten kannReading energy intensity: why less per unit can still mean more total consumptionInterpretare l’intensità energetica: perché meno energia per pezzo può significare più consumo totaleInterpretar la intensidad energética: por qué menos energía por unidad puede significar más consumo total

A metric shows less energy consumed per produced unit. That is useful information about specific consumption. It does not by itself establish that total consumption has also fallen. The production volume and the equipment or processes covered by the measurement must be known before interpreting that wider result.
Read numerator and denominator together
Energy intensity relates an energy quantity to a reference quantity. The denominator might be unit count, mass or a defined service output. These quantities are not interchangeable. A metric therefore needs an explicit unit, reporting period and description of the boundary it covers.
A fictional calculation
In the first period, 1,000 units require 2,000 kilowatt-hours in total: two kilowatt-hours per unit. In the second period, 1,500 units are produced at 1.6 kilowatt-hours per unit. Specific consumption improves by 20 percent while total consumption rises to 2,400 kilowatt-hours. Both statements can be correct at the same time.
Do not overlook the product mix
Producing simpler or smaller items later can change the average even without a technical improvement. Make significant changes in product mix visible for a meaningful comparison. Also check that rejects, rework and idle operation are included according to the same rules in both periods. Otherwise the apparent improvement may partly reflect a changed measurement basis.
Limit the claim appropriately
An operational overview can present total consumption, reference volume and the specific value together. Explain changed boundaries and missing data alongside them. This does not constitute a complete environmental assessment or describe every impact of a product. It does answer two specific questions separately: how much was consumed overall, and how much was associated with the clearly defined unit?
Considerare insieme numeratore e denominatore
Considerar conjuntamente numerador y denominador
